Chairman Ben Bernanke announced that the bank will keep interest rates near zero until jobless rates drop to 6.5 percent. Right now, that figure hovers at 7.7 percent. Bernanke expects the exceptionally low interest rates to continue through 2015. The Fed has also pledged to continue buying 85 million dollars worth of government-backed bonds and mortgage securities each and every month until the labour market has improved quote substantially. We_ll shift our attention to the Middle East now, where for the first time, one of the Syrian government_s biggest international allies has expressed doubt about President Bashar al-Assad_s ability to defeat rebel forces. Eila Adams has been tracking the development and joins us now with details. Eila?Vic, Russian deputy foreign minister Mikhail Bogdanov has acknowledged that President Assad_s troops could be defeated by Syrian rebel soldiers. Bogdanov says that Assad_s forces are constantly backpedaling and losing ground to opposition forces. The comments are particularly surprising, since Russia has repeatedly vetoed UN Security Council resolutions condemning the violence there. But despite the admission, the Russian government still maintains that removing Assad from office would only deepen the crisis. And Vic, Japan has lodged a protest with Beijing over accusations that the Chinese military violated its airspace. The incident took place Thursday morning, when Japanese officials spotted a government plane flying near its disputed Senkaku Islands. But the plot thickens: earlier that day, a coast guard report confirmed that a number of Chinese surveillance ships had been detected in the area. The islands, which are said to be rich in oil deposits, have been contested for years. Vic, BOTH countries claim rightful sovereignty over the islands.
