I_m EA and this is Naked News In our top story today, North Korea has irked the international community once again, this time by following through on their threat to test launch a long-range missile. Katherine Curtis has been following the latest on this story, what can you tell us? Eila, although some details are still sketchy, here_s what we know. The North Korean regime says the launch successfully carried a satellite into orbit. This claim was further confirmed by the North American Aerospace Defense Command.So unlike the previous attempt in April, this isn_t just a bunch of spin and rhetoric on the part of North Korean officials. Exactly - that one failed, and by all accounts, this one did NOT.Definitely a big moment for Pyongyang. Ands I_m sure the international community is NONE to pleased.Not at all Eila. As you_d expect, most countries are outraged by this development. Although North Korea insists the deployed satellite is strictly for scientific research, the U.S. and South Korea are unconvinced. They immediately condemned the launch, suggesting it_s geared at testing ballistic missile technology. Several Security Council members, including China and Russia, say the move is in direct violation of U.N. resolutions, and may destabilize the Korean peninsula. The UK_s response has been measured but still firm, with Foreign Secretary William Hague saying he_s disappointed the country has quote, chosen to prioritize this launch over improving the livelihood of its people. EIla, in what_s being heralded as a significant political move, President Barack Obama has recognized Syria_s opposition as the rightful representative of the nation_s citizens. This puts the U.S. in line with several other countries on the issue, including France, Turkey, and Great Britain. Michigan Republicans have signed two right to work measures into law. The highly-controversial legislation will allow union employees to forgo paying dues, a move critics say could severely weaken union bargaining power. Michigan currently boasts the most protected workforce in the country, with union members accounting for nearly 18 percent of the work force. And in Washington, brinksmanship between Barack Obama and the GOP continues, with the latest threat coming from Lindsey Graham. The South Carolina Senator says if the President insists on following through with tax increases for the wealthy, Republicans may refuse to raise the debt ceiling in the New Year. Many conservatives believe Obama_s resistance to several economic issues, including entitlement reforms, could lead to the kind of depression Greece continues to face. We_ll be right back.
