The United Nations is weighing options on how to best deal with the military conflict in the former French colony of Mali. Several U.N. nations have come forth in support of the Malian government which was overthrown last year by Islamic rebels in the north of the country. The U.N. is discussing new strategies to address the months-long conflict which has escalated in recent days. Over the weekend the French military bombed rebel training camps and several other Islamic military outposts causing heavy casualties. Hundreds of French soldiers on the ground in Mali are soon expected to be joined by troops from neighbouring African nations. Since last yearis coup many areas throughout the country have come under strict Sharia law. The U.S. has admitted to providing technical support to Franceis unsuccessful attempt at rescuing intelligence agent Denis Allex. Alex had been held captive in Somalia since 2009. Although French forces took out 17 Islamist fighters during a dramatic raid this past weekend Allex was gunned down before troops could reach him.An exotic dancer is set to testify in the high-profile sex case of Silvio Berlusconi. Karima El Mahroug will take the stand over accusations that the former Italian Prime Minister had sex with her in 2010 when she was 17 years old. Although both parties deny the relationship investigators say Berlusconi paid nearly 10 thousand dollars for her services.The Kumbh Mela festival has kicked off in India where tens of millions of people descended into the Ganges and Yamuna ya-MOO-na rivers to cleanse their sins. This time out foreign policy was the focus for Mitt Romney and President Barack Obama although the arguments touched on all aspects of their campaign platforms. Ladies?Thank you Rachelle and yes both candidates had their last chances to connect with the few remaining undecided voters Monday night.And it was another tense encounter with both men exchanging pointed barbs. Two early polls indicated that Obama had gotten the better of his opponent but there_s no question this was a hotly contested debate Vic.Absolutely. Welcome to the newsroom everyone.Both former Governor Mitt Romney and President Barack Obama went on the offensive Monday night. Romney was quick to criticize the President over perceived American weakness on the international stage particularly when it comes to Iran and the Middle East. The two tangled over what Romney has labeled the Obama Apology Tour during the President_s first year in office. Another key exchange came while debating military spending where Romney criticized Obama for having a navy smaller than at any time since 1917. However a full term in office showed that experience was on the President_s side. Whenever possible Romney shifted the argument back to the American economy stressing his five-point plan as the key to kickstarting growth. Both men had their say and now the rest is up to the voters. The American public goes to the polls on November sixth.On the international scene Russia has ruffled some feathers by accusing the US of a double standard when it comes to human rights. On Monday Russia_s lower parliament held a three-hour hearing that criticized the Obama administration_s failure to close down the Guantanamo Bay prison as well as the continued use of the death penalty in some states. Relations between the US and Russia have been noticeably more frigid since Vladimir Putin announced his plans for another term as President.Some of the acrimony comes from a new bill proposed by Congress that would have the US government place sanctions on human rights abusers with Russia being near the top of that list. In recent weeks presidential candidate Mitt Romney has even referred to Russia as Washington_s number one geopolitical adversary. We_ll cap off our first look at the headlines with a surprising ruling out of Italy. Six scientists have been convicted of manslaughter for failing to predict the devastating 2009 earthquake that leveled the city of L_Aquila. The city_s court has sentenced the scientists and one government official to six years behind bars for not giving accurate warnings of the quake_s potential impact.The court_s decision hinged on evidence from a meeting held days before the earthquake. The scientists concluded it was unlikely the quake would strike despite worries from local residents. Italian authorities have also been ordered to pay 10 million dollars in damages. Seismologists around the globe have expressed their shock and dismay at the ruling saying it sets a precedent that could severely hinder scientific research going forward.It_s a shame what happened there but I can_t say I agree with the decision Erica. If scientists are afraid to speak their minds couldn_t that lead to even bigger disasters in the future?That_s exactly the argument they_ve been making. The death toll has now risen to at least 56 people - 28 in New York City alone - with many people still listed as missing. New York mayor Michael Bloomberg didn_t mince words saying he expects the number to go up. But the city is beginning to recover. Portions of the subway system are operating again. However due to the effect of the salt water in the system it_s uncertain when full functionality will be restored. For now the Metropolitan Transit Authority is waiving fares.Meanwhile US President Barack Obama is going back on the campaign trail after taking a few days off to deal with Sandy. On Wednesday he toured the devastation in New Jersey with state governor Chris Christie. With more on that here_s EA.Thanks Vic. Obama promised New Jersey residents that he wouldn_t let bureaucracy get in the way of recovery and pledged quote We are here for you. The president is now set to hit Wisconsin Nevada and Colorado for rallies. His itinerary is going to be booked solid in the following days as he attempts to make up for lost campaign time. Earlier this month Obama had a 6-point lead in Wisconsin. Well that_s been whittled down to just 3 points. In New Hampshire Romney is now just 2 points behind Obama. The gap was 7 in September. One state where it looks like Obama CAN breathe easy Vic is Iowa where he leads by a comfortable 6 point margin. Sounds like it_s going right down to the wire. The virus has already led to dozens of deaths and hospitalized thousands of others across the country. Medical experts are already calling it the worst flu season of the last decade. For a full update on the scope of the bug_s impact we_ll turn things over to Peyton Priestly.PP) Eila according to the latest numbers from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention 41 US states have now shown widespread flu activity. That_s a big jump up from 31 states last week. More than 22-hundred people have been hospitalized by the bug which doctors say is far more severe than last year_s strain.Hospitals nationwide have been forced to find extra beds to treat infected patients. And things are particularly bad in Boston where reported infections are TEN TIMES higher than last year. Boston_s mayor has declared a public health emergency and medical teams there will be doling out free flu shots over the weekend.PP) The the questions IS EIla have you got your flue shot yet?EA) NO but now you_ve got me thinking I SHOULD Do we know why this year_s outbreak is so much worse than previous year_s?PP) The simple answer is no unfortunately. However uniting behind a common leader is just the first step in what_s expected to be a long battle ahead. LC has been following this development and is standing by with the latest. Laura? Kat the various factions that have fled Syria met in Qatar and voted on a new leader. His name is Moaz al-Khatib and he_s a Sunni cleric who initially fled the war-torn country several months ago after being detained by the government on numerous occasions. The opposition has been under a lot of international pressure to unite particularly from the US. Al-Khatib says now that the factions have come together as a united front it_s time for the international community to make good on its offers of aid. Opposition forces aren_t the only thing occupying the Syrian government_s attention these days. Israel has fired warning shots into the country following a pair of Syrian mortar attacks. The mortars landed in the Golan Heights region n a Syrian territory that_s occupied by Israel. No damage or injuries were reported by Israel in the attacks. However on Monday Israel confirmed a direct hit on Syrian artillery units. Israeli defense minister Ehud Barak warned that any additional strikes will result in a tougher response. Kat this marks the first time Israel has fired on Syrian forces since 1973. Thanks Laura it seems rather bizarre that Syria would attempt to engage Israel right now.I know between the rebellion and their tensions with Turkey they_ve got their hands full.Is Bashar al-Assadis regime starting to panic?It_s very possible n no matter the reason it was a reckless move.It sure was alright Laura thanks for the updates. We_ll finish up this first look at the news in Greece where lawmakers managed to pass the next round of VERY unpopular austerity measures. That includes huge spending cuts which are necessary if the country wishes to receive another round of loans. They_re set to receive 40-billion dollars which should help stave off bankruptcy for now. VS) Welcome everyone I_m Victoria Sinclair. This is your News off The TopOur top story today takes us to the southern US where a severe weather system has left a trail of destruction across Georgia and Tennessee. At least 8 tornadoes touched down in Tennessee turning over cars and downing power lines. Meanwhile Georgia governor Nathan Deal has declared a state of emergency and issued a mandatory curfew to keep residents safe. The unusual weather system is being blamed on warm winds from the south colliding with colder air from Canada. An already tense situation between Israel and Syria became that much more volatile on Thursday. Israeli warplanes bombed a Syrian convoy suspected of smuggling weapons into Lebanon. With more details on the attack and its potential repercussions we_ll turn to Katherine Curtis.KC) Vic according to US officials the airstrike hit a Syrian convoy that was allegedly carrying Russian-made missile parts to Hezbollah - Israel_s biggest enemy - in Lebanon. However Lebanon_s state-run news agency says the reports are sheer rumours and Hezbollah issued a statement calling the attack barbaric. Meanwhile Syria claims that a separate Israeli airstrike was carried out on one of its research facilities near Damascus killing two people. KC) So far Vic Israeli military and government officials have declined comment.VS) With all these conflicting reports the details are hazy at best. But we do know that Syria has sent weapons to Hezbollah in the past.KC) That_s right and Israeli intelligence believes that Hezbollah is trying to round up as many weapons as it can from Syria in case President Bashar al Assad is forced from office. VS) And with Syria_s massive stockpile of chemical weapons that_s got to be a major concern for Israel. Thanks for the report Kat.VS) In other news the United Nations Human Rights Council isn_t mincing words over Israel_s treatment of Palestinians. In a newly-released report the organization is demanding Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu immediately stop transferring Israeli citizens into several areas including the West Bank and much of the Golan Heights. Eila Adams has the story. EA) Vic according to the report any Israeli settlement in these regions violates the Fourth Geneva Convention which prohibits occupying powers from transferring their own population into disputed territories. The council claims these settlements have subjected Palestinians to ongoing violence destroyed crops and even loss of property... EA) It_s worth noting Vic that the findings were released mere days after Israel chose not to participate in a UN review of its human rights record.VS) Has there been a reaction from the Netanyahu government Eila?EA) There definitely has and the response is blunt to say the least. The Israeli foreign ministry says the UN report is one-sided and counterproductive and an obstacle toward future stability. VS) As complicated as ever alright Eila thanks for the story.
