It turns out ESPN pays a mind-boggling 100 million dollars for the rights to air a single NFL wild card game each year and this season they wound up with the worst of the bunch. No one wants to watch the Houston Texans in the playoffs and thanks to injuries the Raiders are starting rookie Connor Cook. It_s the first time since the merger that a rookie_s made his first career start in a playoff game Not exactly the formula for a ratings bonanza In other football news the finalists for the 2017 football Hall of Fame class have been announced Some of the top names include Kurt Warner Terrell Owens and first-time nominees Jason Taylor and LaDainian Tomlinson. Of the newbies Tomlinson looks like a lock to make it in his first year of eligibility. LT made 5 Pro Bowls 2 rushing titles and was the league MVP in 2006. We_ll find out who_s getting a bust in Canton on February 4th the day before the Super Bowl Don_t look now but the hottest team in the NHL is... the Columbus Blue Jackets? Hard to believe that the team that finished 27th last year is sitting atop the league standings this season. The Blue Jackets are red hot right now winning their SIXTEENTH game in a row on Tuesday night It_s the second longest winning streak in NHL history Columbus will have a chance to tie the all-time mark held by the 92-93 Pittsburgh Penguins on Thursday night against Washington. We_re hoping they do it In the NBA the Lakers haven_t had much clutch shooting lately but maybe they should look to add some talent from the stands A lucky fan was given the chance to win 95-thousand dollars with a halfcourt shot during LA_s recent game against Memphis. You can probably guess what happened next. To which I would add don_t mess with a network with DRAGONS The Cassini probe_s mission to Saturn is almost at an end but it_s definitely going out with a bang It has just completed a pass by the planet that saw it actually skim the upper atmosphere Besides being awesome this also allowed the probe to directly sample the Saturn_s gases upping our scientific knowledge It_ll be making four more near-passes of the planet before ending its mission with a plunge to the surface scheduled for September 15th. Cassini we hate to see you go but we love to watch you leave Expect everyone in America to be staring at the skies next Monday... but some really shouldn_t With the first solar eclipse in decades right around the corner Amazon has found itself in the embarrassing position of having to crack down on vendors selling counterfeit or unverified solar eclipse glasses They_re offering refunds and warnings to those who bought the questionable products but let_s hope they get to everyone before they STARE DIRECTLY AT THE SUN Why can_t people just be content with OUR heavenly bodies? Of course not everything is up and running but with tourism so essential to the local economy getting flip-flopped feet back on the ground is considered KEY to the recovery Just when airlines had made their way off the hot seat a new government report is set to get those buns burning once more The Government Accountability Office says that last year airlines collected OVER SEVEN BILLION dollars in checked baggage fees and change fees ALONE And that_s about a real-dollar increase of nearly a BILLION dollars from what they collected in 2010 For that kind of money drinks should be free... WITHOUT me having to flirt with the flight crew And if you need a cup of coffee in the morning to calm your nerves you might not like what_s coming. If the Council for Education and Research on Toxics has its way cups of joe in California may come with a cancer warning The group has been making their case in a Los Angeles courtroom that acrylamide a known carcinogen poses a real threat. Eila Adams has been keeping tabs on the latest rumblings out of Europe and joins us now with the latest.VS) What_s going on over there Eila? EA= North Am Set middle closeEA) Vic EU member states are planning a TOTAL ban on imports of Iranian crude oilVS) Correct me if I_m wrong but that_s got to be a major blow to their economy.EA) You_ve got that right. Collectively euro zone countries represent Iran_s second largest oil market just behind China. VS) Iran has a tough time keeping friends on the international stage these days don_t they? EA) Without a doubt and things won_t be getting any easier for them over these next few months. Here_s the latest Vic.EA) On Wednesday European leaders agreed in principal to embargo imports of Iranian oil. The move is expected to be finalized at a foreign ministers_ meeting at the end of January. The harsh new sanctions are aimed at deterring Iran_s developing nuclear program. Although Tehran {tay-RAN} maintains the program is for peaceful purposes a UN report in November showed that they were indeed chasing nuclear weapon capabilities. After the US imposed sanctions on Iran_s central bank last week the West is presenting a strong and unified front against the rogue state. The question Vic is will they listen?VS= Nott Set middle longVS) You would think so considering they_ve got an election on the horizon. But Eila this is far from the first story regarding sanctions on Iran that we_ve heard over the years. What if anything makes this one different?EA) Well for one Iran_s oil industry accounts for more than half of its economy. Losing European buyers means they_ll have to find new ones - and most likely have to sell to them at a major discount.VS) We_ll definitely keep an eye on how this develops. Now turning our attention stateside I understand you_ve got some news on a big shift in US military spending from President Obama. EA) I do and it could be very good news for troops overseas The Obama administration has announced what they call a quote more realistic new military policy. This would involve cutting ground forces by ten to fifteen percent and significant reductions in overall spending. Instead they_ll be investing more in air and sea power. The policy would also see a greater focus on a US presence in Asia. This is a move away from the win-win strategy the US has employed for decades - meaning manpower to fight more than one major war at once. The new policy is win-spoil meaning maintaining a military that can fight one war while stopping or blocking another conflict. Back to you Vic.VS= Nott Set middle long (slightly off center to one side but not all the way over as if trying to fit a graphicVS) That_s a pretty significant shift thanks to Eila Adams for that update. VS) We_ll wrap up this first look at the headlines with South Korea who_s reaching out to their neighbours to the North. This is the first gesture the South has made to re-open talks since the death of former leader Kim Jong-Il (KIHM JAWNG IHL) 3 weeks ago. However it appears that the North hasn_t made their minds up on how to deal with the rest of the world just yet. The secretive country completely closed their borders after Kim Jong-Il_s death and has yet to re-open them. To the best of anyone_s knowledge there haven_t been any major problems in the country as the late dictator_s son Kim Jong-un (KIHM JAWNG-OON) transitions into the leadership role. The money helped America get back on track over the last decade. On Wednesday officials announced the agency will begin shedding its holdings in US Treasury bonds and mortgage-backed securities starting by rolling off 10 billion in October. It_s a BIG vote of confidence for the country_s economic future And in a slightly related story it took nearly nine years but victims of Bernie Madoff_s ponzi scheme are FINALLY getting paid Madoff_s infamous fraud was uncovered in late 2008. And that_s because the financial crisis caused people to panic and try to withdraw their investments Madoff_s scam affected more than 35-thousand people to the tune of 6.5 billion in losses. 4 billion dollars has been recovered and will start being paid out later this year. As for Madoff? He_s serving a 150-year prison term If there_s ONE word that comes to mind when we think of France it_s... macho? Nevertheless French President Emmanuel Macron wants to crack down on the country_s macho culture and keep men from harassing women His government is setting up a new committee that will impose fines on street harassment like asking for a woman_s number.
